I hear you think, where do they keep coming from, all those new American groups. That's not really so with The Faults. The V-Roys, a group we all know, broke up last year; Scott Miller tried his luck elsewhere and already has a debut record out called Are You With Me? and a brand new one on Sugar Hill, Thus Away To Tyrants, and leader Mic Harrison founded The Faults. The group consists of Paxton Sellers (bass) and Jeff Bills (drums and percussion), like Mic both ex-V-Roys, and newcomer Robbie Trosper who takes care of all possible guitars.
When you think that this new group can be situated in the same vein as the V-Roys, you're very wrong, if you expect rootsy, sometimes solid Americana, you won't get it... I also had to get used to it, Mic's serving solid rock with pop influences. There's a bit of Chris Spedding's ghost hanging around the album and there are nods to the Ramones and what can be called the better new wave. This means biting, roaring guitars, motorbiking pop, once in a while some pubrock but always deliciously Bad To The Bone, with a melodious touch.The fast train only stops twice: at the solo acoustic Pencils And Paper and at the closer Poison Land, a beautiful alt.country ballad, which shows that Mic didn't really lose his roots.
In music history many greats have changed styles, some did it successfully, others completely failed. The Faults did surprise me in a positive way with a very enjoyable poprock record that'll be hard to get out of my cd-player this summer. (BD)

Waar blijft men ze halen, die Amerikaanse bandjes die als paddestoelen uit de grond rijzen, hoor ik je nu weer hardop denken. Niets is echter minder waar met deze The Faults. Vorig jaar legden de ons welbekende V-Roys er het bijltje bij neer; Scott Miller zocht andere oorden op en heeft intussen reeds een debuutplaat Are You With Me? en een splinternieuwe op Sugar Hill, Thus Always To Tyrants, uit, en frontman Mic Harrison richtte deze The Faults op. De groep bestaat uit Paxton Sellers (bas) en Jeff Bills (drums en percussie), beiden samen met Mic ex-leden van de V-Roys, en nieuwkomer Robbie Trosper die alle mogelijke gitaren voor zijn rekening neemt.

Als je nu zou denken dat deze nieuwe groep zuiver in het verlengde van de V-Roys kan worden gesitueerd, dan sla je de bal mis, want wie hier rootsy, soms stevige americana verwacht komt bedrogen uit… en inderdaad, ook voor mij was het in den beginne een beetje wennen, want Mic schotelt ons een potje rock, doorspekt met popinvloeden voor. De geest van Chris Spedding sluipt genadeloos door te plaat en knipogen naar de Ramones en alles wat met  de betere new wave te maken heeft zijn niet uit den boze. Kortom, snerpende, ronkende gitaren, motorbiking-pop, af en toe een geutje pubrock en voor de rest lekker Bad To The Bone, maar steeds aangenaam melodieus klinkend. De sneltrein komt slechts tweemaal tot stilstand: bij het solo akoestisch gebrachte Pencils And Paper en tijdens afsluiter Poison Land, een prachtige alt.country ballad, waarmee Mic mijns inziens toch maar wil bewijzen waar zijn echte roots liggen.

Vele groten uit de muziekwereld wisselden ook al eens het geweer van schouder, de enen met succes, de anderen met enorme miskleunen tot gevolg. Deze The Faults weten mij echter in positieve zin te verrassen en trakteren ons op een leuke rockpop plaat die deze zomer wel eens regelmatig in mijn cd-speler zou kunnen verdwijnen.
