Daredevils
heat up Old City
It's hard to describe, but local rock band the Westside Daredevils may have hit the nail on the head when they described it as a mixture of "go for broke" and "quiet desperation." But whatever it is, the Daredevils, who will be performing this Thursday at the Pilot Light, seem to be thriving in the local music scene quite well. The band's eclectic rock 'n' roll sound, influenced by bands ranging from the Beatles and the Who to Guided by Voices and Elvis Costello, has been gaining notoriety in the area. Over the past three years, the band has cultivated a fanbase that grows bigger with each show it plays. The band is made up of four former UT students: Brett Cassidy (guitar and lead vocals), Jeff Caudill (guitar, vocals and songwriter), Brandon Smith (bass), Gray Comer (lead guitar and backup vocals) and Morrie Rothstein (percussion). "We're all from Knoxville, except for Bret, who's from Pittsburg," Comer said. "But he's has been here long enough to be Southern." Comer explained, "The other bands we play with locally are very supportive. It's a small but close-knit community, and everyone gets along pretty well." "There's a lot of good stuff going on in a lot of genres of music," he said, and added that clubs, particularly the Pilot Light, have been instrumental in developing the local music scene. Comer jokingly added that after last spring's release of an album, all things small produce a spark, future plans include "making another record that's 10 times better, utter world domination and getting on the radio." When asked what the crowd can expect from a Daredevils performance, Comer responded, "Good rock music." "We put on a show. If you're someone who likes good rock music, you'll enjoy the show," he said. Thursday's show begins at 10 p.m. The Clintons will also be performing. The Pilot Light is located at 106 E. Jackson Ave. in the Old City.
