The Westside Daredevils' "link to the past/eye to the future" approach brings
only slightly mixed results on their debut album. Solid, but not particularly innovative, All
Things Small Produce a Spark album gains momentum as it plays through, and holds up
well under repeated listening. A five-piece from the burgeoning Knoxville scene, The
Westside Devils boast three guitars and three-part harmonies with enough sophistication to
make the talent mesh and cohere. There are a few holes in the arrangements, but this is a
modest hitch that many first-timers encounter. The production is done entirely by the
band, and is surprisingly proficient; for example, the harmonies on "Darling
Currency" are mixed beautifully, the guitars on "Camera Religion" are
punchy, and more impressively, the sonic vamp that concludes the subterranean
"Miner's Shortwave" segues perfectly into the upbeat "Careful Tom".
The only snag the Devils hit comes when the song itself lacks the verve that no amount of
production can add, which is largely the case with the overly popped up "Andrea"
and the absolutely lethargic "Heroes and Zeroes". The Devils do possess
wit in their songwriting -- but more importantly, they share a desire to reinvent the pop
wheel (a la The Flaming Lips), and although they're not a firebrand, at least they
make the attempt. Whether they will succeed where others have failed miserably, only time
will tell -- but if All Things Small Produce a Spark is any indication, the
Westside Daredevils are playing with fire. -- Daniel Arizona
